At first, the lure was fur, then cheap land, and finally, gold. Symbolic of this movement was a half-stock heavyweight firearm, variously called the Plains Rifle" and the "Mountain Rifle," which originated in St. Louis, Missouri. The most famous makers of these rifles were two brothers, Jake and Sam Hawken.

Two J. Henry Half Stock Percussion Rifles Both manufactured in the mid to late 19th century in Philadelphia. Over time they developed a distinctive style of plains rifle known as a "Mountain Rifle". It was of large bore, .45 -.54 caliber, iron mounted, with a scroll guard, nearly always in percussion, barrels were less than 40 inches in length, stocks were usually maple in both full and half stock style. I recently received a half-stock percussion rifle from an estate sale and find conflicting information online about it. I have only been able to find one rifle that looked similar to it described as a "J.Wilt Plains Rifle". The lock has "Loomis, Dayton Ohio" engraved on it (Not "E. Loomis") and the barrel has "J.Wilt" stamped into it. Hide Post In my opinion the Ohio 'sporting' rifle is the top dog of the half stocked percussion rifle. Or is more fitting to use the term 'Plains' rifle instead of 'sporting' rifle as the time period these rifles were being built surely a lot of them found there way out into the expansion of the West?
